The best feedback you can get is the feedback you give yourself. Approach #1: don’t rely on the Barbri graders-rely on yourself How do you know which essay graders to trust and which scores to rely on? Others hand out 9’s and 10’s like it’s their job. The problem seems to be that some are quite picky and will give low scores if an essay is not perfect. Some of them are fantastic and provide great feedback. This is not to say that Barbri or Kaplan graders are “bad”. Her essay score included four scores of 10, two scores of 9, three scores of 8, one score of 7, two 6’s, two 5’s, and a 4. In fact, on the essay portion of her actual bar exam, she received 14 points higher than needed to obtain a passing score. However, she did receive a passing score on her actual bar exam. She did not get a score above a 7 (a passing score) from Barbri or Kaplan graders. This student received several scores of 4 (a passing grade was 10)from Barbri graders as well as quite low scores from Kaplan graders. I had a student for a recent bar exam, who agreed to let me share her scores (although her name will remain confidential). The answer I always tell them is, “not necessarily.” Students wonder if the scores they receive from these essay graders are an accurate reflection of how they will do on the bar exam.

Would you recommend skipping the lectures and going straight to essay/ mbe practice w/ help from a grader? Or would you rec sitting through the lecture series again?
If you just had really bad luck with a grader, then just refresh and try again. If it was due to your organization, spend some time with a tutor to get that down pat. If you failed due to substantial law knowledge, spend more time really memorizing and getting to know the rules. Really spend time figuring out WHY you did not pass and try and focus on those areas during studying. Retakers tend to get down on themselves and it ends up impacting studying which turns into a self-defeat cycle. I would say the best thing is not to dwell on the fact that you did not pass the first time and let it influence your studying this time around. Do you have any advice for them for how best to prepare?

I felt like I needed more PT practice so I actually did maybe 6-7 full PTs when I took the bar but I feel its really a personal decision based on your own comfort level with the exam.Ī lot of people taking the Feb Bar are retakers. Then I would incorporate maybe another PT or two during a 'bar practice day' where you actually re-enact the bar exam by doing 3 essays in the morning and a full PT in the afternoon. If they feel pretty confident I would say at lease 2 Objective Memos, 2 Persuasive and looking over the other types to see which other ones they feel they need practice on. This is really dependent on how the personal feels regarding PTs. How many PTs would you recommend taking for the Feb Bar?
